   THE WAY

Community Service

Stepping Stones To Columbia’s Medical Home:  As MU Med-Peds has grown as a residency program, so has the residents’ commitment to community service.  Since 2004, residents have engaged in several community service projects.  Med-Peds and Pediatrics residents have conducted free health screening evaluations and exams for the medically underserved population of Mid-Missouri.  Social services volunteers also have offered aid with applications to Medicare and Medicaid.  This fall, the program will be expanded to local area schools to more effectively find underserved children in need of a “medical home”.

Camp Hickory Hill Children’s Camp for Diabetes:  Additionally, Med-Peds residents have become active in Camp Hickory Hill.  Our own Rusty McCulloh sits on the camp board.  For more than 30 years Camp Hickory Hill has provided a healthy, educational, and fun summer experience for children with diabetes.  This past year residents served as members of the activity and medical staff, participating in activities ranging from treating insulin reactions, providing first aid services, and counseling troubled teens.  Residents also got to have some fun, participating in all-camp activities including sand volleyball, swimming, softball, and rappelling.  This has always been a well attended volunteer activity.

Mid-Missouri Head Start: Several residents have been participating as advisors on the Board of Directors for Mid-Missouri Head Start, educating members about various topics related to the health of the young children participating in the local Head Start program.
