   LEADING

   THE WAY

Our Hospitals

Our residents have the opportunity to rotate through three hospitals within the city of Columbia.  Together, these hospitals offer a total of 685 beds that are available for patient care and resident education.

University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics

The University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics (UMHC) is the center of our residency experience.  It is a 348-bed facility (233 adult, 115 children’s) that is home to the child health and internal medicine inpatient wards and intensive care units.  This hospital also houses the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center inpatient ward.  The University Hospital serves as a tertiary care referral center for much of the state and is a level one trauma center.

Due to the wide referral base, our residents are able to treat patients from all socioeconomic levels and from both rural and metropolitan populations.  While rotating through a wide variety of services in both internal medicine and child health, residents learn up-to-date evidence-based medicine from motivated teaching faculty.  Our program is also a very personal one, in which residents are able to form cohesive bonds with their colleagues as well as with attending physicians.

Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran’s Administration Hospital

It is our privilege to care for patients at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran’s Administration Hospital, located directly across the street from the University Hospital on the edge of the university campus.  It adds another 118 operating inpatient patient beds and a full range of outpatient clinics.  Our VA is one of the nicest in the nation and is able to offer a complete range of services to its patients due to the close proximity of the University Hospital.

While rotating through the VA wards, our residents gain valuable experience in the essentials of internal medicine including advanced cardiovascular and pulmonary disease.   The faculty at the VA are wonderful to work with due to their dedication to outstanding patient care, education, and research, and the VA inpatient service continues to be one of the most popular internal medicine rotations.

Columbia Regional Hospital

Columbia Regional Hospital (CRH) was purchased by the University on September 30th, 1999 and is now home to the Family Birth Center, neonatal intensive care unit, and newborn nursery.  It still has a private community hospital feel and offers an additional 219 beds for patient care.  With its newly remodeled facilities, it provides an optimal experience for expectant mothers and families both before and after delivery.

During rotations in child health, our residents gain a comprehensive understanding of the resuscitation of the newborn and caring for both the critically ill and healthy neonate.  General internal medicine and its subspecialists also provide consult services to requesting physicians here.  Rotations at CRH provide our residents with the first hand opportunity to compare and contrast the differences between working in a teaching institution and a private hospital.
